Why Prolific is in the checker and survey apps are on the shelf
The verdict
One publishes and enforces a floor. The others' business model is that you can't compute the rate.
Beginners ask why this site computes Prolific and refuses Swagbucks-style apps. It is one test, applied to everything: can the pay be computed from a published schedule before you start? Prolific publishes a floor and enforces it on researchers. The penny apps publish points, bonuses, and streaks — a currency designed so the exchange rate is never quite knowable.
Run the test yourself on any app: find the page that states, in dollars per hour, the least you can be paid. If the page does not exist, the rate is the product being hidden — because at the real rate, often under $2 an hour of clicking, nobody would open the app.
Excluded is not the same as worthless: if you enjoy the apps as games, play them as games. Just never let one occupy the slot in your week where a computable hustle was supposed to be.
The math, shown
- The test: a published $/hr floor, findable in 60 seconds
- Prolific: $8/hr floor, enforced
- Penny apps: rate deliberately unprintable
