The tax door
Side hustle taxes, in plain words — 2026
Hustle income is taxed whether or not a form ever arrives. This page is the whole beginner picture: what the tax is, when it's due, what your car is worth as a deduction, and the habit that keeps April boring. Education, with IRS sources named — not tax advice, and not a filing service.
The one-sentence version
On top of income tax at your bracket, self-employment tax takes 15.3% of 92.35% of your hustle profit — and it starts at $400 of profit, form or no form (IRS Topic 554).
The four dates (2026 quarterly estimates)
| Quarter | Due |
|---|---|
| Q1 2026 | April 15, 2026 |
| Q2 2026 | June 15, 2026 |
| Q3 2026 | September 15, 2026 |
| Q4 2026 | January 15, 2027 |
Estimates are generally required if you expect to owe $1,000 or more for the year. Even when they're not required, the set-aside below is what makes filing painless.
Your car is a deduction with a date on it
| When you drove | IRS standard mileage rate | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Jan–Jun 2026 | 72.5¢ per business mile | IRS Notice 2026-10 (IR-2025-128) |
| Jul–Dec 2026 | 76.0¢ per business mile | IRS IR-2026-29 (mid-year raise) |
The rate is the IRS's full cost of running a car — gas, wear, insurance, depreciation — which is why the Real Pay Checker prices your miles with it instead of with gas money. A mileage log (date, purpose, miles) is what turns driving into this deduction.
The set-aside habit
Move a percentage of every payout into a separate account the day it lands: roughly 26 of every $100 of profit at the 12% bracket, about 34 at 22% — planning figures built from the IRS mechanics above; your real return depends on your deductions and household. Every result on this site computes your set-aside from your own bracket.
The forms, at their real thresholds
- 1099-NEC — platforms and clients report payments of $2,000 or more (2026 threshold).
- 1099-K — payment apps report at $20,000 and 200 transactions (2026, federal).
- Neither form creates the tax. The $400 self-employment threshold is the law whether or not an envelope arrives.
