Check your handbook: the five clauses that govern your hustle

The verdict

Outside-work approval, non-compete scope, conflict rules, IP ownership, fatigue rules — find them before your employer does.

No website can tell you whether YOUR employer allows YOUR hustle — anyone who claims otherwise is selling something. What can be taught is the map: five things to find in your employee handbook or contract before you earn your first dollar.

One: an outside-work approval or disclosure rule — many employers allow side work but require telling them. Two: the non-compete's scope — what activities, what geography, how long. Three: a conflict-of-interest clause — the hustle must not touch your employer's customers, vendors, or subject matter. Four: an IP or work-made-for-hire clause — who owns what you create, and does it claim things made off the clock? Five: fatigue and safety rules, which are real law in clinical and transport work, not paperwork.

Some states narrow what employers can ban — Washington's statute protects extra jobs for workers under twice the minimum wage, with carve-outs. The Fit Finder prints the card for your job class; the kit carries the full checklist. Education, never a ruling on your contract.
