Dead time: the hours your hustle doesn't mention

The verdict

Screeners, waits, drives, and messages are hours. If they are not in your math, your hourly is fiction.

Every hustle sells the paid hour and hides the unpaid ones: the delivery wait, the drive between tasks, the UserTesting screeners you fail, the Fiverr messages, the Poshmark sharing, the 'quick question' from a client. The community calls the reckoning the monthly audit — pull every hour, not just the paid ones.

Dead time is not a fixed tax; it is a fit variable. Prolific and UserTesting pay in scattered minutes, so dead time is small and split. Delivery concentrates it in parking lots. TaskRabbit concentrates it on the road between jobs. The same person can be well-paid per task and badly paid per week.

The fix is not to quit; it is to measure. One honest week of logging — every minute the hustle touched — is worth more than a month of other people's screenshots.

The math, shown

  • Paid hours ÷ total hours = your honesty ratio
  • 70% ratio turns $15/hr into $10.50/hr
  • Log one full week before judging any hustle
