Active hour is not hour: the DoorDash denominator

The verdict

The national band — $11.26 per active hour, gross — excludes the waiting, and the waiting is yours.

Gridwise's 2025 national median for DoorDash is $11.26 per active hour. 'Active' means on a delivery. It does not include the 20 minutes in a parking lot waiting for an offer, the drive back from a far drop-off, or the slow Tuesday you stayed logged in out of hope.

Work the two denominators on the same evening: $56 earned over 3 active hours is $18.67 an hour. Over the 4.5 hours you were actually out — door to door — it is $12.44. Subtract 90 miles at the IRS rate (76¢ in the second half of 2026: $68.40 of car cost if those were all business miles — a week like that can erase the evening) and the tax set-aside, and the night can land under minimum wage.

Nobody at DoorDash is lying to you; the model is printed. The lie is the denominator you choose at midnight. Choose the total hour — it is the only one your life spends.

The math, shown

  • $56 ÷ 3 active hrs = $18.67
  • $56 ÷ 4.5 total hrs = $12.44
  • Then subtract miles × IRS rate and the tax set-aside
