Etsy fees, explained on one $30 sale

The verdict

Four slices, not one: a $30 Etsy sale loses $3.30 to fees before shipping or tax.

Every beginner prices Etsy with one number in mind: 6.5%. Etsy actually takes four slices. On a $30 sale with no shipping charged: $0.20 listing + $1.95 transaction (6.5%) + $1.15 payment processing (3% + $0.25) = $3.30 — 11% of the sale, gone before materials, shipping, or tax.

Two more hide at the edges. The one-time shop setup fee ($15–$29) is charged before your first sale. And if Etsy's Offsite Ads made the sale, add 12–15% on top — only on ad-driven sales, capped at $100, and it is the one fee you cannot switch off once you pass the revenue threshold.

The verdict is not 'Etsy is expensive.' It is that a $30 price built on one fee is a fiction. Build the price on all four slices and the platform is fine; build it on one and the payout will correct you.
