Fiverr takes 20% of tips too
The verdict
Every Fiverr dollar — gig price, extras, and tips — arrives as 80 cents.
Fiverr's cut is a flat 20% of every order, including tips. It is the most honest fee in freelancing because it is the most visible: set a $25 price, receive $20. The problem is not the fee; it is the pricing done as if the fee were not there.
The second cost never appears on the fee line: revisions and messages. A $50 gig that takes three hours of work and an hour of back-and-forth nets $40 for four hours — $10 an hour before self-employment tax. Tracked honestly, many 'good' gigs are minimum-wage gigs.
Price from the net backwards: decide the hourly you need, add messages and revisions to the hours, divide by 0.8. That is your sticker price.
The math, shown
- $50 gig → $40 after the 20% cut
- 4 true hours → $10/hour before tax
- Need $20/hr net? Price = 20 × hours ÷ 0.8
