Gumroad's fee is two fees wearing one coat
The verdict
10% + $0.50, then 2.9% + $0.30 processing on top — cheap products feel it most.
A direct Gumroad sale pays 10% + $0.50 to Gumroad, plus card processing of 2.9% + $0.30. On a $10 product: $1.50 + $0.59 = $2.09 in fees — you keep $7.91. Sold through Gumroad's Discover shelf instead, the fee is a flat 30% with processing included: you keep $7.00.
The flat $0.50 + $0.30 pieces are why price level changes everything. At $5, the stack takes about a quarter of the sale. At $50, about an eighth. Gumroad quietly rewards products priced like tools, not trinkets.
Discover's 30% is not a rip-off by default — it is rent for a customer you did not have. The math question is whether that buyer would have found you anyway.
The math, shown
- $10 direct: fees $2.09 → keep $7.91
- $10 via Discover: keep $7.00
- $50 direct: fees ≈ $6.25 (12.5%)
