The monthly audit the forums do by hand, done properly
The verdict
Once a month: every dollar in, every cost out, every hour counted — one page, one honest number.
The audit is a ritual in the side-hustle forums: at month's end, pull every expense — subscriptions, mileage, supplies, platform commissions — subtract from gross, and divide by every hour, including messaging clients, posting listings, and fixing mistakes. People hand-build it in spreadsheets because nothing else does it for them.
The audit sheet asks for five totals: gross in, fees out, costs out (miles at the IRS rate, not gas), hours (paid and dead), and the tax set-aside moved. From those five, three numbers fall out: your month's net, your true hourly, and your pace against your floor.
Do it monthly and two things happen. Bad hustles identify themselves within two cycles, while they are still small. And April stops being a season of dread, because the money for the tax bill has been moving aside all year. The printable workbook version — pre-loaded with the dated fee tables — is the heart of the kit.
